Get ready for an un BEElievably entertaining time! Kingston Literacy & Skills will host the Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee in the Spring 2018. Proceeds from the event are used for the delivery of Literacy Programming in the Kingston community.
Broadcasted live on Cogeco TV, up to 12 teams will battle it out for top honours, with awards being presented not only to the winning team, but also to the crew with the most fundraising dollars, and the group with the best costumes.
“Teams of three participate in a traditional, very exciting spelling bee,” explains Chuck Dowdall, executive director of KL&S. “No one knows what word will stump even an experienced team.
“The competition provides an incredible test of mental agility and intellectual savvy for adult spellers while supporting literacy programs in the Kingston area.”
The evening — which Dowdall says serves as a great team builder for organizations and businesses — is overseen by a panel of three judges from the literary and media communities.
Team registration fee is $400, which includes dinner for three team members. Teams are also encouraged to collect pledges and bring their own cheerleaders. The general public is also asked to attend and join in on the fun.

Family Literacy is about the ways families use literacy and language in their daily lives. It’s the way they learn; the way in which they use literacy to complete everyday tasks; how parents or caregivers help children develop literacy skills; and how families use literacy to maintain relationships with both each other and the community, including with organizations and institutions.Learn More
