Are You Ready to “Bee” the Best Speller in Kingston?

It’s the most wonderful time of year! We are thrilled to be hosting our “Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee” yet again, and it promises to be bigger and better than ever! Here’s everything you need to know:
  1. When and Where
The 23rd Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee will be taking place on Thursday, May 10 at the Ambassador Hotel and Conference Centre in the West Tower. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m., with the festivities getting underway at 5 p.m. With a dinner break to fuel our spellers, we expect things to wrap up by about 9 p.m.
  1. Everything Else You Need to Know
Teams of three will vie to “out-spell” each other in pursuit of being crowned Best Spellers, with plenty of fun and laughs along the way. The difficulty of each word is categorized as easy, medium, medium-hard, hard, killers, or sudden death. Our words are collected throughout the year by the Word Committee with the Canadian Oxford Dictionary as our reference. The funds raised from this event will help provide support to continue our mission to empower lives through literacy and training. Literacy affects families, personal health, employment and wages, self-esteem, poverty, and community engagement. Your pledges, sponsorship and donations will help support our vision of communities where everyone has the skills to achieve their full potential.
  1. Be a Part of the Fun!
Do you think you have what it takes to take the top spot? Want to come cheer your favourite team on? Interested in one of our incredible sponsorship opportunities? Looking to join our team of spectacular volunteers? Get in touch with us and we will make it a reality! We hope to see you there!

Five Things About Adult Literacy You May Not Have Known

Fact: Nine million Canadians struggle with low-literacy. It’s an alarming statistic, and it makes one thing evidently clear: something needs to be done. One of the first steps in combating the massive issue is educating Canadians about illiteracy — how and why it happens, and in what way it has become such a pressing issue for so many, just for starters.
