KL&S strengthens our community through the development of literacy, language and skills for adults and families.
To create a world where everyone has the literacy and skills to achieve their full potential through access to education and employment, increased independence and community participation.
Kingston Literacy & Skills (KL&S) is a non-profit community organization composed of professional staff and dedicated volunteers who deliver upgrading and workforce preparation programming to adults and families in Kingston and surrounding communities. Since our founding in 1977, we have been committed to supporting adults with low literacy skills, working with them to achieve their goals of further education, employment or independence. Over the years, we have grown to include Family and Early Literacy (FEL) as well as Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) programming.
The Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey (ALL) of May 2005 revealed that four out of 10 adult Canadians, age 16 to 65 – representing 9 million Canadians – struggle with low literacy. They fall below level 3 (equivalent to high school completion) on the prose literacy scale (Adult Literacy and Life Skills (ALL) Survey, Statistics Canada and the Organization for Economic Do-operation and Development, 2005).
Considering those adults with low literacy, 15% have difficulty dealing with any printed materials; an additional 27% can only deal with simple reading tasks (Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey, 2005).
Literacy impacts families, personal health, employment and wages, self-esteem, poverty, and community engagement (Statistics Canada, 2003).
In addressing levels of low literacy, KL&S strives to continually provide up-to-date programming that meets the needs of our students in order to help them realize their goals. Some of our programs have been developed in partnership with community agencies, such as the Ontario Early Years Centre, the Salvation Army and Ontario Works.
We also have long-standing partnerships with St. Lawrence College, the Limestone District School Board, the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, Kingston Frontenac Public Library, Queen’s University and the municipalities we serve.
KL&S is a recognized leader in the literacy sector and a pioneer in family literacy. Our history of community support, successful volunteer recruitment and management, and effective working partnerships with a variety of organizations in Kingston and surrounding area has contributed to our longevity and our positive impact on the communities we serve.
